Sure it's good to know this stuff but he focuses on it SOOO much. Like the kid who only practices weird ass skateboard tricks that nobody else does just so he can be like "check out this trick I can do that you can't!" 

Why not just ask them to solve actual coding problems? People hate the whiteboard / leetcode type interviews so much, but that actually uses the skills that the job requires and is a good reflection of skill. This stuff is just a reflection of obscure language knowledge, and any half-decent programmer knows when they're dealing in obscurities and will simply google if needed. You can't google intelligence or problem solving skills though.
