I’m definitely guilty of saying “yeah everything is good”. I used to think that’s what managers wanted to hear, but your other approach makes more sense as it does communicate my value every single time. Nice!!!👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
I’m a new CEO of a nonprofit and I’m a tell you right now you are 100% spot on when my board asked me how it is going! I am learning how to delegate things more, be stronger yet gentler on my approach of saying I need help and I need it now! I have a new boss every year so that changes things for me tremendously and can cause a lot of anxiety.
Yep. I had my 1:1 today. It goes so much smoother when you get your thoughts together.
Just remember to be aware of those, who's taking credits. Even your manager or boss or leader, etc. I learned this hard in working life.
Honestly this is also great advice for meeting a my PhD advisor, I’ll def keep this in mind!
Erin is my spirit animal.
Always waiting for the tap at the end and the "you got this"✨ So satisfying! You're right, I got this 😎💪🏼
I love your "you got this" ❤
What's even crazier is how few managers know how to conduct one-on-ones
Most of MY bosses would be IRATE AS HAIL if I took over the meeting like that. Big managerial egos do NOT take kindly to anyone taking a "leading tone" with them in Any situation. : D
Also don't let yourself be blindsighted into 1:1s by your manager, ask to rearrange to a future date when. You've had time to think
I just sent my manager a similar email. Our first meeting was more like, “everything is fine” lol So I’m hoping the 2nd check in will be more productive. Thank you! 🙏
I used to do this, then, I was denied a bonus because apparently keeping your boss updated and asking for their opinion shows "that I have trouble doing my job and being organized" so now I just say "all good"
This also applies to meeting 1:1 with clients
This is so useful! I often find 1:1s are so unproductive cuz no one would ever mention what goes into 1:1s. I even asked my managers and mentors (been at 7 diff companies, all gave very non-answers). Thanks Erin! This gives employees a chance to show visibility to a busy manager :)
That's so helpful Erin, thanks❤. I am definitely the 1st type of person because I have no idea how to approach this type of interaction
As someone who conducts these meetings with my employees, I'd rather you be giving this advice to managers so they can ask the right questions. The senior person in a meeting should be leading it and making sure they are making it a productive time for everyone
Thank you. I concider you one of my Heros. Your advice has helped me and several others. I'm very happy and blessed to have ran into your content.
This video came at the perfect time!!
