But it had the opposite effect when other country placed retaliatory tariffs back. he acknowledged that the tariff had not achieved its intended goals and had deepened the Depression. His experience with the tariff contributed to the broader shift in U.S. policy toward more free trade in the decades that followed.

Regarding luxury brand markups—to be fair, we always knew the luxury brands were ripping us off with massive markups. Nobody believes a scarf could possibly cost $500 to make.

Thank you for pointing out that tariffs worsened the Great Depression. A lot of people don’t remember that because they don’t study history. I agree that a lot of trade agreements needed to be renegotiated, but the haphazard way Trump is implementing tariffs will economically harm the USA and many of our international allies. The fact that we allow the president to unilaterally declare tariffs is wild - our laws need to be revised so that a 34x convicted felon never becomes president and a president can’t unilaterally declare tariffs without the backing of congress

Having worked in electronics retail, that $600.00 tv cost $50 to buy, and is what is covered when it is written off. The rest is the mark up for the name on it, or where you bought it. Also numerous brands come off the same line and the only difference is the bezel and uploaded software.
