Traction was critically important during the running portions. Getting feet to ground with little bounce as possible was all that allowed the runners to gain leads.

While rolling, bouncing was also the enemy. When rolling in a fashion to get downhill as quickly as possible, you're converting vertical gravitational potential into horizontal kinetic energy to move. When you waste that kinetic energy going upwards, you destroy your momentum.
