Fusion power will not be a viable source of energy until the output of the fusion reaction can be (eventually) converted into sufficient electrical power to well outdo what it takes to run the entire fusion plant. "Break even" is a trade term that is IMO intentionally caused to be misunderstood to represent how close we are to the above goal when what it actually means is simply getting more power out of the fusion reaction that was put into it. But it takes a lot more than a few 9v batteries'-worth of net positive energy to power an entire plant.
