as an austistic person, this was very healing to watch, and put into words many things i have been feeling for a very long time.
"the problem with jargon is not jargon, it's hierarchy. ... it's the weaponization of semantics" holy shit, that makes so much sense!
Video essays are resurrecting intellectual public oration before our eyes. I’m excited tk witness this portion of history. The interspersed stanzas of poetry literally made me drool, actually literally.
“Intersectionality exists not to quantify oppression but to qualify experience.” WOW this quote hit me like a sack of bricks. I need to read a few books to understand this distinction I think.
I’m so sad this channel hasn’t had any new uploads since this gem of a video was dropped. I appreciate this one regardless thank you 😊
I hope you are okay and that the world is as gentle as possible with you because this is really good and I would love to see more of these works of art. Take care !
bookmarking some of my favorite moments to review later <3 20:17 "The assumption that mutually shared experience is continuous and uninterrupted can lead to misunderstandings, and insistence on using some previously defined version of you shared language can lead to higher risk of assimilation and alienation." We are always being born into newer selves. This reminds me of the Heidi Priebe quote! “To love someone (long-term) is to attend a thousand funerals of the people they used to be.” 32:30 "The way that semantics are consistently dismissed is representative of how much we collectively undervalue the labor of translation—this process of making that which is intrinsically complex, coherent. That which is intuitive, intentional." 44:41 45:18 "rightness" is collaborative 49:44 52:44
I am a 43 year old black woman from Bermuda. Your video has moved me to tears. Please keep making them. You articulated this that leaves me moved and lost for words. The younger me thanks you. The older me thanks you. The “me”(?) that I am becoming thanks you. New sub.
I hope you are taking a break to rest, and this wasn't your last upload, because your view point is amazing, and I think your voice is a great addition to the conversation around communication and community. Amazing.
i rewatch this from time to time. genuinely the best youtube video of all time. i’m always as inspired as the first time watching when i return. thank you
You've put into words that feeling I have, the reason I hesitate to communicate with some people at all. That burden which is placed on the marginalized to communicate better. To play nice, to walk on eggshells, to avoid causing offense. All while being told that actually I'm making them walk on eggshells. I'm the one who goes out of my way to learn their language because I know they won't be willing to put in the effort to learn mine. It's exhausting to make myself heard and that's why. I have to be an expert in their semantics and navigate them perfectly before they'll even consider mine. Thank you, this video is absolutely brilliant. Your style is engaging and fluid and thought-provoking in a way I've never seen done in a video essay format. I'll be sticking around for sure 😊
i studied interpersonal communication and conflict when i was in university and was under the impression that i was a "good communicator" but as time has gone on and ive tried to help other people practice better communication ive recognized the point you made about how nobody is a good communicator right now. under our current system it's just doing as good as we can and taking breaks as needed <3 wonderful video
I found this video on the leftist cooks discord and was like "wait this is all the things I've been thinking and feeling but better explained by someone I hadn't seen yet" which means likely a lot of video essays I've seen since were inspired a bit by this, I've binge watched the rest of your vids and wanted to say thank you! I really like this concept of anarcho-relating you describe, as someone whose path to relationship anarchy and anarchy have built upon one another, hearing someone combine the two clicked a dot in my head that should have made more sense sooner. I've been doing a lot of work with talking to others, reconnecting, destroying the assumptions and biases I have of what humans are and can be, and helping others find their own path forward while aiding one another. Your videos have reinvigorated my stance and worldview and practice, as well as giving me videos to share that I feel effectively explain a lot of principles that I've come to value myself. Thanks for all you've made so far and shared with the world.
this woman legit just dropped one of the greatest videos known to humankind and then vanished
❤✨ I now love semantics, thank you!!✨❤ I recently discovered I had DLD throughout my entire life. (Developmental Language Disorder). Communication had always been a constant challenge not because I couldn't speak but because SAFETY and TRUST were extremely important for me. People argue over petty things. As a kid, I saw too much WAR because of lack of understanding. I believe your right, SEMANTICS can help save ourselves much unnecessary conflicts and give us better understanding of others. I hope you create more videos like this one because your insights make a wonderful difference in our lives. New Subscriber to your channel 🙏 💝 🙏
“We rely on complexity in order to reference simplicity reliably.” So true; there are many, many very small words that carry SO much associative meaning behind them and require unpacking in order to be understood.
This is a phenomenal piece, as someone whos studied a lot of linguistics(parricularly sociolinguistics) and formal logic people scoffing at semantics drives me up the wall. It is such an important field and I'm happy to see such a thorough piece on it.
English is my third language and I had to focus all my attention to this video, it was so interesting, even if I didn't necessarily understand every word. My curiosity and willingness to look a little dumb (if I encountered an unfamiliar word) is what gave me drive to finish this video. I feel grateful for the Youtube algorithm that suggested me this fantastic video. Your way of speaking so pleasant to the ear, and your smart words leave me in awe.
This is really well written. This is all well-paced and digestible. You should feel proud.
