I actually work for the company that developed the LAL test, and will say that the studies that show the rates of death after crude collection (at least the ones that i have read) were not done in the same manner as the process is today. All of our crabs are hand caught by independent fishers that often times branch out to the companies that chum the crabs to stop them. We work intensively with the SC department of natural resources to ensure that the crabs populations are minimally impacted. When the crabs are bled, their natural circulatory system will stop allowing their blood to escape after ~15-20% has escaped, and it takes a large number of crabs to actually get the amount of blood that is seen in the photographs you usually see. When crabs are delivered by the fishermen, they are cared for with the up most respect and are returned to a location where they won't be recaptured all within at most 16 hours of when they were caught, and are never held in retention ponds. On the topic of the LAL test, there are actually two major ways it can be performed. There is the Gel Clot and the Portable Testing Systems (PTS) test. I work with the PTS side. Testing usually takes less than 20 minutes from start to finish
Well, now I'm crying over fake crabs.
"Satellite males" sounds like a gen z insult
"Everything is gonna turn into crabs eventually." Good. Crabs are my favorite animal. They have natural body armor and weapons, they look cool, and they tend to just act as natural little janitors. I've always wanted to have them as pets.
the amount of effort put into these videos is god dang bonkers (im on a binge)
The first time I became aware of horseshoe crabs was in 1979, on BBC's "Life on Earth". I thought they were pretty cool creatures. I knew, vaguely, that their blood had some medical use, but I had no notion they'd done us such extraordinary good. Damn right they deserve some love back.
Always felt good flipping them over and getting them back into the water... alive. I definitely have a soft spot for Horseshoe Crabs (even if they're not TeCHniCalLY "crabs"), they're just awesome! Thanks for the video!
This channel is my new hyper focus, I thank my autism for searching random things, helping me find you
I have a preserved horseshoe crab that my grandfather made for me (out of a dead one he found)! My grandparents live in Delaware where they have horseshoe crabs on their beaches- I was born in DE, but I live in Seattle. Crazy to now know that horseshoe crabs help with something so vital!
The octopus looks so angry with the eyebrows I love it
So sad to all the horseshoe crabs who have died for us, but damn i solute these blue blooded troops for saving me from covid
Spiders also have blue/green blood for the same reason. Granted, I imagine sourcing from spiders would prove problematic at best. And I don't know if it would work the same anyway.
Fact:The horseshoe crabs tail is a somewhat rudder or steering gear for them to get around
Knew these little critters ever since Walking with Dinosaurs, but thought for years they were just as extinct as the dinosaurs (I was very small and didn't get all the info yet) and then was so surprised that they actually still exist. Also, it's really weird and funny thinking of them as arachnids. Pseudoscorpions look close to, but are not truly scorpions, iirc. I encountered several before in Germany, more specifically book scorpions. They look like a Scorpion, but without a tail, and they are so tiny and are good for books and should be a friend to any bibliophile, because they hunt inside your books for mites and stuff that would harm the books. I find them adorable.
I LOVE horse shoe crabs! I would have so much fun as a little kid going to each one I found and I would pet them and thank them for helping humans so much.
If you want to take a look on how true crabs differ from false crabs and how carcinization works, i hella reccomend watching Lindsay Nikole's video about crabs! As always, incredible video !
Would you ever make a video on sea spiders (pycnogonids)? They look so silly and dumb and I like them very much. They're so dang skinny that some of them have organs in their legs. They also do look a lot like aliens.
A haiku: The summer sun sets As horseshoe crabs crawl ashore To get their bang on
I love horseshoe crabs. This video reminded me of a silly little game I bought on my 3ds where you walk around a beach helping horseshoe crabs get back to the water
