I'm sure its probably just a pronunciation mishap, maybe due to computer generated voice...it's usually the issue/reason ... Its basically pronounced as Sah-win, not Samhain...
its also not to ward off spirits, as such, its to confuse the spirits so they dont possess that particular human...
Halloween aka All Hallows Eve, is on October 31st as it is 'the eve of All Hallows Day'. All Hallows Day aka All Saints Day is celebrated on November 1st & then All Souls Day on November 2nd. This 3 day long celebration/holiday was claimed by Christian churches from traditional Pagan beliefs with is actually not linked to religion at all, its harvest time. Its about giving thanks for love ones, for family, both present & those that have passed over & its also about giving thanks to the earth for supplying the food to carry all through the winter & into the spring again.
