Hi. I just want to add a little bit to the review. This book is actually a translation/adaptation of a book that came out loooong ago, around 2002 (i remember learning Japanese with the original one in 2003). It is a Spanish book called "Japonés en Viñetas" (lit. "Japanese in comic panels") and the book itself is an adaptation of some Japanese lessons that were published monthly in a magazine for manga fans. The thing is that all of the manga examples are taken from well known manga, and they were slightly modified for the book (completely redrawn and phrases were slightly modified) because of copyright issues. For example, the strip you showed in the video comes from Ranma 1/2 and it's the moment where Ranma and Akane first met. If some examples reminded you of Dragon Ball or Evangelion, it's probably because they come from there.
I read the two volumes of this method and I think that the first volume is more like a friendly "first approach" that doesn't try to be overly technical, but just tries to pick you Japanese language curiosity. Some of the issues you mentioned are actually adressed in the second volume, where they treat particles more in detail, and give more culture-related notes.

So if your native language isn't English, it may be worthwhile to look for a version translated into your own language. I know in Spanish they do some comparisons in terms of phonology and grammar that just wouldn't work in other languages because of the way they work, and I'd expect they adapted them into the respective target languages.

Imagine teaching some English to Japanese natives, coming across the following sentence for example “The brothers are coming” and then telling them the sentence is pronounced ザ　ブラダス　アル　カミング….100% wrong…lol so I definitely agree one should not relate pronunciation of a new language to one they know as it will likely be incorrect. This books seems like an interesting concept, considering I learned Japanese with the sole purpose of consuming content (since I have never set foot in Japan). Good luck on your Japanese studies :)

I've had this book for several months and am about halfway through it, and its helped my grammar, however my kanji skills are seriously lacking

I was in shinjiku, and I didn't know anything about learning japanese books, it was random, I picked the book volume 1 and 2.
When I returned to my country I founded it hard to start the book, as it doesn't give enough time/sheets to practice hiragana for example.

So now I am getting Genki books.
