Right on the money ammo availability.Everybody has been raving about the 6.5 PRC but the old 270 Winchester out performs it by a slim margin. Why buy a 6.5 PRC when the old 270 is a better choice?
That is very true for us in the UK
The .284 projectile is the indisputable king from way back !
Ron kind of recommending 308 😮 What's the world coming to?
Just picked up a mint 742 woodsmaster 308 with 4 x 32 scope and peep site underneath Strictly for convenience
Feels weird getting a .308 recommendation from Ron of all people, but the point is valid. It definitely pays to check what's generally in stock at your local ammo supplier because while everywhere will have .308 and .243, almost nowhere will have 7mm-08, and dew places will have .260, most places will have 6.5CM. So if you've got your heart set on .260, you don't necessarily need to go with a super ubiquitous alternative that's only kind of what you want, but you probably want a fairly common one that's close.
I handload so normally availability is irrelevant; except after LR primers dried up for two years straight. My rule of thumb is the shorter the barrel the larger the caliber you want because smaller calibers typically lose more velocity with short barrels than large calibers.
Thank you.... lol. 260... !!! The hungai gods have spoken. Had this discussion with Remington and Winchester at the NRA Convention/show. Hard to beat the CorLokt or a Silver Tip even talked about the BronzeTip.
I want a rifle chambered for 7mm SGLC whenever I get to a point where I am not just fighting to survive day to day life. It's a wildcat so I'd have to handload it ,but like the Ackley improved cartridges, I can use factory 7mm-08 to fire form brass or if other situations arise and I had to use 7mm-08. The 7mm SGLC is pretty darn impressive. 150 grain partitions reach about 3000 fps. 175 grain partitions reach about 2750 fps . That is from a 24 inch barrel which means I can use a 20 inch barrel with the 7mm SGLC and have right around the full 24" 7mm-08 ballistics . I could deal with anything on the east Coast and most things in the Continental USA with the right bullet selection.
Big believer in commonality and availability of ammo as a decider. Also, once I have my hunting rifle, disinclined to examine anything else.
30-06 is best girl.
I find it hilarious that people believe they need a 270 or 7 mag or the big one right now 6.5 anything.not even 30 years ago 30-30 35 Remington 38-55 45 LC and my absolute favorite little deer rifle 22 Hornet were taking trophy bucks by the thousands. But apparently deer evolved and gained the ability to duck and dodge any bullet not doing 3,000 plus FPS they act like you need a 1000 yard rifle.
Ron, great video. I have said the say thing for years. Thanks for sharing.
I stick with the classics so I can always find ammo.
The availability of ammunition? The 308 and the 243 Winchester's most plentiful rounds everywhere.
To much people seek the ballistic perfomance, but no so much seek terminal performance
Why i built my ar-10 in .308.
The .308 an the 7mm-08 has never failed me or my wife. Why fix what ain't broke?
