So what you want about Lucas’ plans. At least he had a cohesive story to tell, with a sexy red lady in the mix. This story sounds like it would have been awesome, especially if they handled Darth Maul well. Sadly not our timeline

This is immediately better than what we got because it doesn't just retcon everything accomplished in the original trilogy out of existence so that the first movie in the new trilogy can just be Episode 4 again. It's an actual sequel that deals with the results of the original movies.

The thing is despite the "Somehow Maul returned" jokes they already had an explaination due to the Clone Wars series. It shows in detail how Maul survived and the following arc of becoming one of the most influencial crime lords with the help of his brother. It´s a storyarc that runs nearly through the entire series from the point of Savag being recruited and magically enhanced by the Night Sisters and later retrieves his brother from a garbage dump on the bottom of the pit he fell in.

Imagine if Darth Maul was revealed to be the villain in episode 8. Then somewhere important in the movie when it all looks like its going to hell you hear "IF YOU'RE BACK THEN I AM MUTHAFUCKA" and Mace Windu appears 😂😂
