As a Dane living in Canada (10 years now) I actually got a bit emotional when this was resolved. The fact that my two home countries now have a land border is rather nice. It got a surprising amount of coverage in the news in both countries and I enjoyed it all. It also kinda feels like this video was made just for me :) Loved it and your initial disbelief
I'm going to miss that adorable little "war" we were having with Denmark.
Some countries have a lesson to learn here. Canada and Denmark are two of the most civilized countries there are. ❤ Sweden
You may not be aware that Canada also shares a maritime border with France, the islands of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon which are an hour ferry ride from Fortune, Newfoundland. The approx 6k residents have French citizenship, vote in French elections, euro is official currency, mainly Metropolitan French is used as spoken in France, etc.
Canadian here. Always thought that the whisky war was good fun. I had not realized the political and safety ramifications of not resolving the border until you showed the map of the Arctic and NATO countries on one side and Russia on the other. I'm glad that it is resolved.
Thanks Tyler for all your videos. I learn a lot through watching them, and you make it fun!
Dane here! This is when mature adults solve their differences :) It might have been a bit silly but good old humor is the way to go and it is a lot funnier than actual war :) Most of the world could take a page from the whiskey war playbook. Glad to be neighbours with Canada :D
I served in Bosnia (I was in the Canadian army) with a Danish soldier for six months and we both kept trading jibes at each other over the silliness of the issue!!
As a Danish Canadian, and with my dad being named Hans, and my mom's maiden name being Hanson makes me proud of this.
When "taking territory for principle alone" gets taken to the most wholesome note 😂❤
I and a small group from the NWT visited Hans Island to refuel while tracking some wildlife. The Danes were there taking down the Canadian flag. We didn’t have a flag with us but used a a Calgary Flames hockey sweater and claimed this land for the Calgary Flames. Danish tv were course hockey fans so showed the special in Copenhagen
🇨🇦 Thank you from Canada we love our Danish Neighbors
Just so you know, Denmark still has sovereignty over Greenland. It's just that Greenland has a lot of autonomy within Denmark now. Also, you may have noticed they split the island 40-60 instead of 50-50. That's because there is a big crack on the island, and they figured that putting the border on such a significant landmark on the island would be nice, just to be able to easily tell where the border is when you go there.
Hey, loved your video, Canadian here. I learned a few things here too... the saddest of which is that this "war" is now over. As a kid in the 80s, I remember adults smiling as they told me about this war we were embroiled in... the whisky war. The story I was told was, each group of soldiers was leaving the whisky for the next group of soldiers, from the other country. It was more about leaving gifts; the raising of flags was a fun way of saying "this is our island", but the flags were always treated respectfully and stored properly. Where I'm from it was regarded as a big, friendly joke between allies - especially among the soldiers - in how this wasn't getting solved by the politicians. I don't think it was ever in danger of becoming a violent event.
Nobody seem to mention that Canada and Denmark could be the shortest border in the world? Combined with the fact that Canada has the longest land border with USA, Canada could also have the shortest land border and that would be hilarious. Canada is at it again for being unique/quirky!
As a Dane I think it's kinda sad that the worlds friendliest "war" has ended. Its was indeed a fun pact. Fun fact: Hans is the name of a Danish king born 1455 - died 1513
Another reason why we canadians decided to resolve the Whiskey War is due to increased Russian and Chinese aggression in the Artic. It does say something about both Canada and Denmark that we can fight a "war" without causing casualties to either side.
I'm Canadian and obviously don't follow news very much because this is the first I've heard of this!! It's so cool!! I love sharing a border with Denmark!!! I'm kinda loving it!!!
I finally see the power of a reaction video. Really cool and calm stuff. And the video was pretty darn good. So. I could focus on the reactions. I get it now. ❤
