US here. I am a man of the age in which it is mandatory to be enrolled in “Selective Service” (some states you register for that while you get your driver’s license). This is probably the one federal institution that explicitly discriminates by sex, but because of historical reasons I guess they were like “who’s going to care to change it” so it stands. One reason why we never passed the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1980s was because one of the few prominent female anti-feminists told everyone they’d start drafting women if we had equal rights, and people cared a lot more about that back then . I suppose times have changed somewhat; back in the 1990s when my father was being interviewed for going into West Point, they asked him how he felt about women in the military. Now there are many in combat roles, and a few have distinguished themselves for extraordinary ability and heroism. While I personally hold certain attitudes towards the necessity of able-bodied men to protect women, children, the elderly, and the defenseless, I think it’s only fair they enroll women in Selective Service just as much as men, or else not have it at all. The whole thing to me isn’t worth seeking exemptions from constitution and law in a time when it’s becoming less justifiable. Many countries already draft women as well as men, and it does not detract from perceptions towards their military prowess.
In The Netherlands it's paper only too, search it up
