Since resting your fingers on a flat surface is going to be the default state for most users (and less straining on the arms) you might want to experiment with an inverse mode where lifting a finger is a keypress and lowering it back down is a release.

I'd imagine that you can keep the fingers touched down, and only register touches, which means lifting and releasing the finger.
