Doing this with the task manager was much more easier than typing the whole command and also for some(if not all) programs taskkill would require admin privileges.....

hold ctrl + shift and right click an empty space in the taskbar while holding ctrl + shift and click exit explorer

The Windows Command Processor (cmd.exe) is one way, but using modern command lines is preferable. 
In PowerShell the code to perform the equivalent action is 
Stop-Process explorer.exe
Restore the desktop with
Start-Process explorer.exe
