@larryjharkey

As a teenager in Riverside California, I washed dishes at a Greek Resteraunt and the owner was a Creteian partisan fighter during the war. He was an amazing man with a great resolve.

@ioannisathanasopoulos4895

The flag on the thumbnail is that of autonomous Crete, under the Ottoman rule, so it is not only wrong but is almost an insult to those who fought and died for the unification of the island with Greece. The person you depict as prime minister Metaxas early in the documentary is actually the King of Greece.

@JohnAsinimali

My grandfather, who was from Crete, was liaison officer with the British (he spoke English and several other languages). As a result, he was evacuated with the British and Commonwealth troops. Once the defense collapse, he took care of six British and Commonwealth soldiers-- hiding them in the mountains for long periods of time (with him finding shelter and foraging for food) and sneaking them down to the beaches at night to see if transports were available to take them to Egypt. After several months, they finally found a transport to Egypt. As he was trying to get on the ship to continue fighting the Germans in North Africa, the English officer, whose life he had saved multiple times, pulled his gun on him and said that this ship was only for British and Commonwealth, and not for Greeks. He was left on the beach. He tried to survive for a month or so, but was eventually captured as POW by the Germans. He did not have much love for the British after that, but still hated the Germans more.

@JH-ck1nr

Have always loved Crete, the people and their tenacity. Respect.

@37Dionysos

I have long visited and now live in Crete on the plateau above Heraklion's airport. I constantly find British-made shell-casings and bullets in the soil, and locals tell me that Cretan resistance saboteurs constantly wrecked German aircraft there with night-time grenade attacks. The Germans never had much more than a toe-hold here and took out their useless rage on countless village populations, stealing every last morsel of food, as they did in Athens. And Germany to this day denies that any reparations are called for.

@goofyahhh254

I wonder how these documentaries are made, thanks for makin em tho

@CaptainHarlock-kv4zt

That flag is an insult to us Cretans and the rest of the Greeks. Our ancestors fought countless revolutions in order to unite in a single state with mainland Greece.

@mohammedsaysrashid3587

Informative documentary....Greek 🇬🇷 citizens fought bravely... because they were on their fatherland

@jokodihaynes419

The Greeks fought to the bitter end

@clairec2291

Put the Greek flag immediately.You have put a flag on the thumbnail which rapresent the Turkish occupation before 1900.

@brianmaitai7685

I remember reading that as late as 2002, German tourists to Crete would be attacked by furious elderly surviving resistance fighters and denied service in hotels and restaurants.

@chrismacpherson7230

We will not say hereafter that the Greeks fight like heroes, but heroes fight like Greeks.
Winston Churchill talking to Parliament. 1944

@stephenlineman

great vid

@LondonPower

The Cretans fought in the mountains as guerrillas against the Venetians from 1204 and then the Turks until 1912, i.e. they have a centuries-old tradition of guerrilla warfare 😂 Even today, every family has a dozen weapons at home, from Kalashnikovs to bazookas, for protection, with the tolerance of the state.

@Sam_Green____4114

That was the mistake ! sending the Cretan division away from Crete !Had they stayed they would have fought tooth and nail to protect their own homes and home land !

@JH-ck1nr

They have never forgotten what the Germans did.

@davidlafranchise4782

Seems like enigma could have known about German transport planes and a few Spitfires could have changed the course of history!

@jpakos6701

WHO TOLD YOU TO PUT THIS FLAG ON THE THUMBNAIL .??? This is a flag that represents everything that Cretan people despise : the occupation of the Turks ....the belonging to the Gate of Instambul ....Put the Greek FLAG NOW

@lalremsanga4089

Some of the British officers during the world war are just plain indecisive and incapable
