@OctopusLady

UPDATE: The video has been remonetized, but I need to keep the blurred part and the censored thumbnail. And yes, I know. The thumbnail looks WAY more suggestive when it's pixelated versus when it's not. I think it's dumb, too.

ORIGINAL POST:
Hey folks, YouTube, in its infinite wisdom, demonetized this video because it contains "sexual content." Even though there is NO sexual content because THEY'RE JUST CLAMS, YOUTUBE. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU.

They specifically cited the thumbnail and the timestamps 00:23 - 00:25 as being the primary offenders, hence the thumbnail changes and the random blurring during that part of the video. And yes, it's not content from MY video that's been deemed inappropriate, it's the clip from @NickDiGiovanni's short. And it's not even the entire clip?? I don't know what YouTube is thinking. Also, I don't think Nick's original video got demonetized, so idk why YouTube has suddenly decided that it's inappropriate now???

Anyway, you're not really missing much during the blurred out part. All you see is Nick holding the geoduck clam as he talks, then he does his signature throwing-a-knife-at-a-cutting-board thing, then it cuts back to him holding the geoduck again. I KNOW. SO SCANDALOUS.

I already linked it in the description, but if you want to watch Nick's short, you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/hIXW0265GQo

And if you happen to have a few extra dollars to spare every month, I humbly request you consider supporting me on Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/theoctopuslady If YouTube deems my changes insufficient and keeps my video demonetized, I am going to be out about 1/3 of my typical income this month, so any help would be appreciated.

@redactedwatkins6195

i was SO ready for the Appendage to be its outstretched foot. amazing. thats his snorkel

@jansenart0

Ze Frank wanted to do a video about these but he's still trying to stop giggling long enough to record.

@jellycrab

In the anti-tropics, female seahorses give birth, and vampire squids drink blood!

@maninalift

I WAS NOT READY for the image of a scallop pooting along. I was all superior, thinking "oh some people think that all bivalves are sessile, not me" then you hit me with a swimming ashtray and a water-jet powered hors d'oeuvres in-one.

@rhiannonm8132

youtube making you pixelate them is actually top tier comedy in its own sad way

@GTK123

i showed my science teacher whos a marine biologist ur channel and she told me she binged every one of your video and that ur her new favorite scientist youtuber!!! :)

@TerrinX

I've seen so many content creators react to foreign words in a lot of ways, and just hearing her legitimately make an attempt even if not perfect was so refreshing.

@salamlawrence9658

I grew up on the Puget Sound and learned the hard way to avoid the small holes in the sand at low tide. Those are geoduck holes and if you step on them you'll get a nice squirt of cold water up your pant leg.

@lordmalecith2300

1:16 As an amateur linguist and conlanger, I can say with quite a bit of confidence that much of the orthography of these words is taken directly from the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), and learning it can help a ton with language learning and pronunciation!

Now I don't know much of anything about this language at all, but I can give a very educated guess and guide to the orthography and its pronunciation. Just a little bit of a heads up: Phonetic notation is written in what are called /broad transcription/ and [narrow transcription], indicated by the use of forward slashes and square brackets respectively.
 - The little superscript w /ʷ/ is attached to the consonant that comes before it, and indicates that the consonant is pronounced with rounded lips!
 - /q/ is a voiceless uvular plosive, also called a voiceless uvular stop. To pronounce it is similar to the voiceless velar plosive /k/, only the part of the tongue that touches the roof of the mouth is slightly further back and closer to the uvula.
 - The dotless question mark-looking character seems to be the glottal plosive/stop /ʔ/. This is the sound that occurs when saying "uh-oh", or sometimes at the beginning of words in English that start with a vowel when pronounced on their own or at the beginning of a sentence.
 - The "c" character in Lushootseed orthography is most likely a voiceless alveolar affricate /t͜s/~/ʦ/. It's the same sound at the end of words like "pets", and at the beginning of "tsunami".
 - Characters with the apostraphe-looking diacritic, such as "c̓" /t͜sʼ/~/ʦʼ/, are what are known as ejectives, which are voiceless consonants (usually plosives) pronounced with a glottalic egressive airstream.
 - "ɬ" is very clearly a voiceless lateral alveolar fricative /ɬ/. To pronounce it, put the tip of the tongue on the alveolar ridge (The gums just behind the upper teeth) and blow air out the sides of the tongue.

And that's all I can say with my nearly nonexistent knowledge of the Lushootseed language, but I hope you found it interesting!

@astick5249

I always like Geoducks and what arguably doesn't help their resemblance to a special appendage is the fact that often when walking the shores of a rocky peach at low tide you can hear and see squirts of water coming from the ground, if you go up to where a geoduck is buried and touch the tip of its exposed siphon that will also prompt it to squirt water as it retracts deeper underground.

@danirodriguez3682

I did not know that scallops could kinds swim hop. And they look very silly doing it. Brought a smile to my face. Also thank you for answering some of the questions we all do have about geoducks.

@Cleestooncleestoon

2:12 I dunno, in my opinion "antitropical" sounds like it's about sea creatures that got radicalized and are AGAINST their kin in the equator

@Akurokuma

I really appreciate that you admit when you're not sure how to pronounce a word rather than confidently mispronouncing it (like far too many educators in my life).

@midorionions9253

I remember a time when the thumbnail was not censored 🚬

@Aubrey-j2n

Shout-out to The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. Our mascot is Speedy the geoduck!!!! Our fight song goes as follows, "Go, Geoducks go,
Through the mud and the sand, let’s go.
Siphon high, squirt it out, swivel all about,
let it all hang out.
Go, Geoducks go,
Stretch your necks when the tide is low
Siphon high, squirt it out, swivel all about,
let it all hang out."

@OlyChickenGuy

As a born-and-bred Washingtonian with native ancestry, thank you for your correct pronunciation of geoduck, and your interest in one of our local languages!

Also... please elaborate on the location of these geoduck criminals. Living in Washington, and especially after moving to the South Sound area, geoducks are so abundant that I've NEVER heard of them having any particular value, but this is the second video I've seen that has mentioned organised geoduck crime. Around here, you can get a geoduck chowder for about the same price as regular clam chowder, and I've known tons of people who work on geoduck farms (usually as temp workers), and not once have I heard anything about temptation to steal from these companies, and they often let workers take "unappealing" geoducks for themselves for free.

Am I ignorant to some underground network, or do I just live in an area of such abundance that it would be like trying to convince your local population that dandelions are extremely rare and valuable?

@adre2194

2:00 imagine hearing the coolest term of all time, describing it as even cooler than it already was and then saying you're "not a fan" 😭

@kwispy9670

3:27 I thought spongebob had lied to me my whole life, but no scallops really do move like that

@bln8285

0:34 i love this utterly perfect representation of the typical scientist
