There is "pivoting," and there is "flopping around like a fish out of water." Some people suggest this crisis was engineered by Microsoft, but in the immortal words of Don Keough, president of Coca Cola during the New Coke debacle: "We are not that dumb, and we are not that smart."
Crazy. It's just one impulsive decision after another with these board members.
Lesson to be learned here: When you start a company, have great lawyers work with you to design bullet-proof By-Laws that ensures that clueless morons can't ruin your baby.
I am sure the members of the board have lawyered up! Don't expect to hear from them without an attorney present.
Sam Altman has handled this incredibly well. His plan B, moving to Microsoft which has access to GPT-4's weights with 90% of OpenAI's workforce including Ilya Sutskever is only slightly worse than getting the board to resign. If Greg and Sam were still on the board it would be a matter of flipping one person. As it is, from a standpoint of AI safety, it's only a question of how the board steps down and whether some lawyer can draft up a plausible statement that exonerates Sam without making the board liable for ousting him in the first place. Emmet Shear may be OK with this too--I'm sure he and Sam have met at YC many times over the years even if they started in different batches. It's frustrating not to see hearts and sentiment on Twitter from everyone, but this whole thing should have been resolved quietly from the beginning.
Uh, GPT appears to be down. Patiently waiting for the board to bring it back online. It’s getting real.
D'angelo one if the board members has a major conflict of interest with poe from quora which was even going to get a store now. They are very similar to gpts which will also get a store. Hes most likely behind this coup and the employees know this.
Whatever else happens, can say for sure, this OpenAI saga is going to be a case study on governance, ethics, business continuity in every MBA program. Also expect a Hollywood movie and a Netflix serial with more twists n turns..
Perfect Time For Ai To Employee Itself 🤣😭😂
Thank you for the great take. No you are not being hyperbolic. It speaks volumes when 95% of company employees sign a letter wanting the board to resign.
How to take a Golden Goose and think ‘hey, let’s make a goose pie’. 🥚
This OpenAI board will change how boards work going forward.
The three remaining board member are fighting for their survival!😂
Hmmm… I thought only Budweiser was stooopid. Apparently it doesn’t stop there.
These are great commentaries on the drama
A great example of how a few exec people can destroy a booming company.
This is the most unprofessional, idiotic, asinine, shooting in the foot type thing I’ve ever seen in Silicon Valley. And if you’ve ever watched Silicon Valley, you know how hard it is to be that. My original theories gave too much credit assuming there was some calculated thought process behind these decision makers. I was wrong to think that. If they can make stupid decisions like this in the face of creating something whose magnitude will be the most consequential in humankind, we’re all screwed. Sooner or later. If not by them, by whoever comes next to lead the race.
Effective altruism doesn't translate to effective boards and effective decision-making. What a bunch of kids, and frightening that these are the people controlling what they think is the biggest threat to humanity!!
Why don’t they just write a prompt on how to solve this?
