I hate wearing strap on knee pads with a passion...I have tried various sorts but never found any I like. As an alternative, I use builders/construction pants that come with a cordura "pockets" over the knees....These take foam pads and are much more comfortable to wear. If you feel you need further protection, use the pads as a template, place it over something like a bit of lino/vinyl flooring tile, and cut out a couple of make shift pads. These can be glued or duct taped to the foam ones to give a bit more protection to the old knees..

A Bic lighter is invaluable, when technology fails IE Your running handheld UHF radios and you lose reception because you've walked over an ironstone Ridge or put a wrong waypoint in your GPS.So your lost, with a Bic you can light a fire and be found,Also great to test your machine by seeing how far you can wave it above your coil.Learning to chase the faintest signals makes you a better detectorist .Especially In WA attach 1.7 metres of nylon cord and .75 metres of chain to your belt,by dragging the chain you can always follow the chain marks to find your way home. Also great for proving an area and finding that first piece.Go 200 metres north move across 10 m back to the start go South 200 metres and do the same and so on.Your building a 400 metre bicycle wheel, great for large open areas
Thank you very much great advice
All good advice, thanks. I dig every signal, even when the detector says "iron". I've heard too many stories of a nugget being found in the same hole, so I re-check the holes after I remove a metal can, for example. Thanks for posting.
I purchased a Garmin Etrex 10 to mark where the car is, situated.
Be smart and invest in a Personal Locating Beacon (plb) it will save your life if something goes wrong
Thanks again Bruce! I would add a good quality pick and a plastic scoop to that list. If you don't dig, you won't find gold!
Does Australian Geology Travel Maps App work when you are not in phone range?
