People really should just know their powers of 2 in this computer generation. ( 2 4 8 16 32 64 128 256 .....) Then the answer is immediately apparent and requires no calculation at all.

They don’t always cancel. What you really want to do is set the bases equal to eachother. And then once bases are equal you can set the exponents equal to eachother. So now really you have 4x=4. Divide by 4 and x=1

You cant cancel it that way, rather equalise 4x to 4 then divide by 4 n the result is the same, x=1.
