I think it could be interpreted in both ways. I think your interpretation could possibly be correct, but I think it could also be interpreted in a different way as well. I think she could be real but that by the end of the film Travis's view of her has changed. He was lonely at the beginning of the film and saw her as this angel that could possibly cure him of his loneliness. Someone who could make him happy, but after she walked out on him after the adult film incident and everything he had been through after that throughout the film he realized that his original perception of her was a pipedream and that she wasn't really any different from most other people he encounters doing nights on the job and I guess he sort of outgrew his desire for her. So, in retrospect, you could still say that she was an illusion to a certain degree. So yea, there are different ways you can look at it, but I think the ending was basically saying that the thing or person that he thought he needed or wanted or desired to help fulfill the emptiness that he had inside of him he didn't really need after all. So in that aspect, yea, it was an illusion, and he came to terms with that.

well 2019 joker was inspired by this movie and in that movie its proven that his love affair isnt real so i think its the same interpretation in taxi driver
