This video is a very poorly paraphrased version of what really happened. Firstly, the Donner party left between six and eight weeks later then what they should have. Secondly, they were tricked by a huckster, Lansford Hastings, into taking a “shortcut” that he “discovered”. Thirdly, even though Hastings promised to guide them through this “short cut“, he deserted them, Hastings did show back up only to convince them to traverse the [Salt Flats] after both he and his horse nearly died of thirst. The Donner party lost dozens of cattle and two wagons in the process. Several members of the Donner party died while on route and were buried where they died. When the Donner Party finally arrived at a lake at the base of the Sierra Nevada’s, in what is now named Donner Lake, Donner Pass and Donner Memorial State Park, they became trapped in a freak blizzard. Upon the start of the snow, they tried hurriedly to escape and continue their journey but within one hour of futility, realized they were hopelessly trapped. Over the course of the next several days, they cannibalized all of their wagons in order to make makeshift shelters for themselves and their livestock/animals. Being pleat Lee on able to hunt any deer or anything larger than rabbits, they were forced to eat all of their cattle remaining cattle and when the livestock ran out, they ate their horses. During this time several other members of the party, being elderly,infirm, unable to withstand the cold, died of either starvation or just froze to death. After all the animals and any last pets that were left had been eaten, they were forced to cannibalize their dead. After that, they reportedly shot and killed their Indian guide as well as one or two other people and ate them as well. One or two people were able to individually cross the mountains, find help and returned with a rescue party. While not being able to rescue everybody at once, they did bring the children and the weaker members of the party. Sadly, one of the children, after eating his first meal he had in months, passed away from stuffing himself too full. Upon being reached by subsequent rescue parties, what was left of the Donner Party was rescued and brought to safety, having spent nearly 7 months being trapped in what was called a 100 year storm. News got out that the group had resorted to cannibalism and the surviving members were ridiculed and shamed for it for the rest of their lives, lasting into the early 1900s.
