When asked how Fascism starts, Bertrand Russell once said: "First, they fascinate the fools. Then, they muzzle the intelligent."
It's a no brainer, but thank you Atlantic Magazine for reminding us of these hard facts about Fascism with different names.❤
Central European University used to be situated in Budapest, but pressure from Orban's government resulted in it relocating to Vienna.
Endowments are for very specific purposes and are not a slush fund to replace cancelled grants. The grants are for research purposes for science, medicine and other fields. The granting agency asks the recipient to further specific goals. For example, grants might fund projects to find a cure for specific diseases.
Historically, the folks on campus who speak out to criticize the White House tend to be those with a more social disciplinary orientation. So philosophy, sociology, psychology, poli sci, literature, social work, etc. Such disciplines start out with a disadvantage by being perceived as somehow superfluous/"unnecessary". What we need more of are outspoken faculty in medicine, engineering, math, astronomy, meteorology, and computer science; those areas where the public might balk at funding being removed from them.

While the Administration's hijack of universities and colleges is legitimately alarming, I write here for the more general purpose of citing my appreciation of this podcast series and Ms. Rosen's and her producers' topic selection and style. That being said, I also note, for no discernible purpose, that both this and the Atlantic's Good on Paper podcast use theme music that feature the use of finger cymbals or zills. Notably, my ear has become attuned to those tones as I anticipate the podcasts themselves. Finally, my comment has the primary purpose of increasing the comment count for YouTube's channel-ranking algorithm.
Great and chilling discussion.
So full of sadness for our country! We will recover, I believe, but at what cost in human capital?
Education is in decline and elite schools are hoarding endowments preventing many from becoming educated. Ivy League schools have billions, so why do they need federal funding?Yet, vouchers are welfare for the wealthy. What is happening?

Scary!
Under US law it is illegal to provide weapons to a country found to be in violation of the Leahy Act and International Humanitarian Law….Unless you’re Israel.

At 25:00 What she says without admitting it : Our so-called private universities are more than one-third tax-payer funded.
