What I think The Darkness represents is the embodiment of all nothingness the avatar of oblivion basically, which is ironically or maybe not so ironically is the same as their respective representations in comics, in fact you could call them the same beings in the sense that they are multiversal constructs. The nameless mist (nonsensical name btw) represents all matter in contrast and Yog Sothoth was born of their first interaction so he represents the gateway to both the material and immaterial worlds.
