Whatever your views on this. You have to admit this is just amazing...how this little dog was able to survive, and it isn't that she survived...it's the length of which she has that just makes you want to shake your head in both amazement & disbelief (how she wasn't injured/what did she eat/where did she go to drink/how was she not attacked by another wild animal/was she helped by humans?)...I can't imagine what the owners must feel...I would cry...this is just one of those heartfelt stories that warms you...I am so happy for Valerie and her owners...knowing she will have a safe, warm and soft bed to sleep in now again...hopefully they go on to enjoy a beautiful life as a family :)

Shes a dachshund.........they are natural hunters and shes young and healthy.... so no suprise even though it was wilderness mostly they can be very quick and crafty .

I seriously doubt a miniature Dachshund survived that long unaided on KI. Her condition when ‘recaptured’ sort of gives the game away and I note no video of the capturers with the captured which increases my suspicion as to who and why this was set up. . I have read a few comments suggesting Daschunds are great hunters but not miniatures with no previous experience where no rabbits exist and few other small animals apart from snakes and lizards. If ‘Valerie’ lived off reptiles she would be dead by now as most common snakes on the island are venomous. Some suggested carrion but that would be on or near the only main road and she would be full of parasites and skinny even if this was possible. Might have lasted a few weeks but not over a year and a half. It’s also been drought conditions with only the central reservoir or Penneshaw desal plant. So someone has been both watering and feeding this dog. I have lived in remote areas with terrain similar to KI and have seen lost dogs much more capable than Valerie and even after a couple of weeks lost they don’t look so well. (Yes, leaving a piece of the owners clothing is the standard response to lost dogs in remote areas and it works surprisingly well) The reason for this subterfuge? I can only speculate but I had never heard of the ‘sanctuary’ where she is now but this story is now worldwide. I don’t have much time for conspiracies but neither do I suspend my disbelief at a story that seems more than just a bit unlikely.

Are we sure Valerie wanted to be ‘rescued’? Hopefully she’ll settle back in with her owners.

The rescuers say they don’t want to release Valerie to her owners yet, as she needs time to readjust to humans. She needs to be reunited with her owners asap and can readjust with them, it’s their dog and their decision. In most incidents where lost animals are found after a lengthy time, they’re reunited with their owners immediately, this sounds strange.

Not known for their hunting abilities? They were specifically bred to hunt badgers!! They are fierce hunters.
