OK — I did just watch the original video several times and DID hear the switch in microphones at approximately the 2:18 point. I would have never have been able to hear the switch point had you not revealed it. Over the years I’ve heard many reviewers proclaim the NT1 to be an excellent microphone for the price and this video certainly prove that to me at least. While others may complain about your technique as far as I’m concerned it worked. BTW — I was one who said I Hearn no difference between the two microphones on the original video. Well done.
Remember for only $249, NT1 5th is both the QUIETEST and most UNCLIPPABLE mic on planet❤🎉
The source, the room, the placement, and the processing are all far more important to the final sound than any decent mic vs even very expensive mics. This fact is very difficult for many people to deal with as it means one really needs to focus on what goes into the mic rather than simply being able to purchase the "right" product and have that in itself magically produce great sounding audio. Gear (not just mics) often gets the blame when things end up not sounding like someone hoped it might when the source or the processing is the real problem. Take an SM57 for instance, have a great source, good placement and technique, process it correctly with eq and compression and many people will simply not believe you used an SM57.
A friend played me a recording of a vocal through a $100 mxl ribbon mic. It was beautiful. I’ve been recording for 30 years so I’ve heard a few mics before. It’s a lot about having a great singer, performance, and mix. There is so much incredible equipment everywhere so just do it. Rode and Neumann are great companies, but so are many others….
OK, IMHO that was brilliant. What fascinates me is that I kept hearing the 2db boost as a different mic, not just once, but every single time. Looks like I'm heading out to snag an NT-1.
Dude!!! I don’t feel got and I’m not upset. This was an AWESOME idea to make it truly a blind test 😂😂😂😂 I was one of the many who perceived that 2db boost as crisper highs and I think it was a bit of genius to do what you did to make your point. And, it just re-iterates the fact that I did my homework a few years back when I got my very first LDC and got the NT1 5th Gen. It’s a fantastic mic. Thank you sir.
LOVE IT! THANKS! Brilliant way to neutrally present the comparison. While I still eagerly look forward to listening to the first video with a good setup, I am confident I would probably be fooled anyway. That said, when it comes to individual voice recording, it typically happens in a vacuum. With one mic to evaluate. If one is satisfied with how it performs, it works.
Looks like I'm buying the Rode NT1. Thanks for the videos!!!
I'm not offended with the "lie". I found the experience and topic interesting.
Point well made! Great work on this and the preceding video. 🎸 And, oh yes, I’m now even more happy that I own an NT1 (5th).
Nice way to make the point! At the risk of coming across as pedantic, the U87ai does offer some additional capabilities that make it popular in recording studios including the multiple polar patterns, pad, and HP filter. Worth well over $2000 more? Probably not for those recording spoken word audio or singing vocals in 99% of cases.
What a creative way to teach! Love this content!
Incredible video idea. Late to the party, but I have to admit, you had me fooled. Reminds me of a blind poll Eastman Sound did years ago where the TLM 103 won handedly over the U87 in several scenarios, in spite of all the irrational hate it seems to get online.
That's interesting! I was confused with the original comparison video, because I couldn't figure out what I heard all the time – I had this inkling that the lower frequencies sometimes seemed to be slightly different, but since my ears are not the best (60+), I was not sure about the highs. But all the time I thought – this sounds like the same mic. At one point I thought that there was a slight difference, but then I thought that I was imagining it. Now I have to go back to this first video …
"louder is better" is an old hi-fi trick used by dealers when they demoed the cheaper (but more profitable) speakers. They were always a "little" louder.
Aiden, seriously best comparison test on YouTube PERIOD! It proves that nowadays people can get incredible results with affordable gear. Awesome content 👍👏
I just did the test myself but I did not watch the full first video and came to a conclusion after 30 secs thinking Mic A is the Neumann since it had "less treble harshness". When you said in this video that you switched them at some point I looked for the swithc myself before you revealed it and said 2:18 and was right. Now though I would call the NT1 to be better sounding over all since it had more treble extension from what I can hear.
Reminds me of why a spectrograph is more valuable than our ears.
Bought NT 1a as my first mic (except cheap pc mic), in a combo with rc electronic twin pack.. Years has past and i stil love this mic, i start to use lots of different mics as a musical hobby and as a moviemaker (i'm a cinematographer, DOP. ). And without any brand love or hate i can tell it's simply a damn good mic far ahead that people actualy need to make good sound
