TIPS FOR RENDERING ANY HAIR:

1. Simplify Hair Forms: Don’t focus on rendering every individual hair. Instead, block out the overall mass and flow of the hairstyle.
2. Understand Hair Strands: For curly hair, visualize each strand as a twisted ribbon that narrows at the end, and add individual hairs after shaping the form.
3. Follow Natural Hair Direction: Start from the hairline and follow the natural direction of the hair with smooth, long strokes.
4. Divide Hair into Groups: Breaking the hairstyle into curl groups makes the rendering process easier and more organized.
5. Model Lighting: After blocking the hair, focus on lighting by adding light and shadow. Turn off the linear sketch to focus on tonal work.
6. Use Multiple Light Sources: Adding a second light source (one warm, one cool) creates more depth and helps define the lit and shadowed areas.
7. Choose the Right Brush: A brush with tapered ends, like a Brush Pen in Procreate, is ideal for shaping curls.
8. Observe Light and Shadow: Focus on where light falls and shadows deepen. Highlight areas that reflect light and enhance shadows for volume.
9. Zoom Out for Overall View: Regularly reduce the picture scale to assess the overall look of the hairstyle.
10. Avoid Over-detailing: Only detail the illuminated parts of the curls, and let shaded areas blend into the mass.
11. Add Color Variations: Hair is not one flat color. Add subtle shade variations to create depth and richness, especially through lighting.
12. Focus on Key Details for Final Render: Use a smaller brush for detailed areas, especially in well-lit parts. Blend areas where hair clumps together or is out of focus.
13. Adjust Lighting for Depth: Areas closer to the light source will have more contrast between light and shadow. Those farther away will have softer transitions.
14. Use the Lasso Tool: The Lasso tool is handy for refining the hairline, shaping shadows, and enhancing highlights and glare.
15. Master Curly Hair for Other Styles: Once you can render curly hair, straight or wavy hair becomes easier. Curly hair has more volume and depth, making it a great training subject.
