🎯 Pain in the region of the SI (sacroiliac joint) is extremely common, but depending on which healthcare provider you talk to, you might hear different explanations about this type of pain
-
🗣️ So let's briefly talk about this:
-
📚 The SI (sacroiliac) joint is essentially the location where our pelvis meets our spine (at the sacrum bone)
-
💪🏼 It is heavily reinforced by several very strong ligaments, and current research shows movement at this joint is so minimal that it’s essentially undetectable by human hands (It extremely stable joint and moves very little - only millimeters)
-
❌ So the likelihood of your SI joint being “out of place” is very low, even though it may FEEL that way
-
🥴 It may even feel "stuck", "misaligned", etc, or even make a popping noises with certain movements
-
🤔 However, many times what we "feel" or "perceive" is happening in our bodies isn't actually happening that way
-
🤯 Pain, or lack of movement secondary to pain, can alter our perception of what’s happening with our bodies. Sometimes things feel “out of whack” and are difficult to describe
-
🤰 Note: if you are pregnant or were experienced major trauma, you could have more movement in your SI joint, either due to the trauma itself or from ligament laxity that occurs due to certain hormones released during pregnancy to prepare for childbirth
-
👌🏼 Outside of these cases, as mentioned above, it is one of the most STABLE joints in the body
-
😎 So don't stress too much about this!
-
⁉️ So...how do we make it feel better?
-
💯 Well, there's a lot that can influence pain in this region - the low back, hips, knees, ankles, etc...even poor beliefs, as mentioned above!
-
🎈 So there's no one-size-fits-all approach
-
✅ However, focusing on improving the strength and motor control (controlling your movement) of the trunk ("core") and hips can have a profound impact
-
🎥 Here I show just a few of the exercises that may be helpful in strengthening these areas and improving your movement control
-
🚨 However, these are only suggestions, and what YOU may need to work on may vary to some degree 👍🏼
