Unveiling the basic mechanisms of puberty onset in Atlantic cod - EPICOD project

Atlantic cod is a prime species for Norwegian aquaculture and a key player in its diversification; however, several aspects of cod biology are still unknown, including the onset of puberty.

Early sexual maturation can negatively impact both the environment and fish production, through gene contamination and deterioration of fillet quality and post-spawning mortality respectively.

EPICOD is a timely initiative funded by the Research Council of Norway and Nord University that aims to unveil the basic mechanisms of puberty onset in Atlantic cod and how it is affected by light.

To achieve this, our interdisciplinary team of experts will use state-of-the-art methodologies such as single-cell transcriptomics and epigenetics, genomics and metabolomics.
