VIEWPOINT - Navigating Ethics: Computers and Patient Privacy

Computers are an integral part of daily life. From the latest smart phones to fitness trackers and the advent of self-parking cars, we have little choice but to adapt to rapid changes in technology. Medical professionals are no less immune from this as they do their work. Computer programs are often used to analyze patient data, which is generally more efficient, by taking away the emotional link with the patient. Technology also boosts our ability to combat pandemics like the flu, Ebola and now Zika, by conducting widespread data collection and rapid analysis. Our panel discusses the implications of this extensive sharing and analysis of patient data and the ethical issues they raise.
