Using The 6 Thinking Hats

The Six Thinking Hats Framework was created by Edward de Bono in his book the ‘The Six Thinking Hats ‘. Edward De Bono says “the main difficulty of thinking is confusion. We try to do too much at once. Emotions, information, logic, hope and creativity all prevent us from thinking clearly. To quote de Bono: “The biggest enemy of thinking is complexity”.
De Bono describes 6 different types of thinking that we do all the time and associates each with a different colour hat. The hats include:
1. Blue Hat - The big picture
2. White Hat - Information and facts
3. Red Hat - Emotions
4. Black Hat - Critical thinking
5. Yellow Hat - Positive
6. Green Hat - New ideas

The Six Thinking Hats framework requires you to approach problems from different perspectives in successive steps to acquire a new solution. This helps keep your thinking clear and prevents confusion from trying to think from too many perspectives simultaneously.

The Six Thinking Hats technique can be used by groups to solve complex problems in all types of business contexts.
