The ESSM (Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile) is a surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missile primarily designed for defense against anti-ship missiles. It is a cooperative development program between several NATO nations, including the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Spain.
The ESSM is an evolution of the original RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missile, which was developed in the 1960s. The ESSM incorporates advanced technologies and improvements to enhance its performance and effectiveness. It is designed to be launched from naval vessels, such as frigates and destroyers, to provide self-defense capabilities against incoming threats.
The ESSM features an active radar seeker that allows it to autonomously track and engage targets. It can engage multiple targets simultaneously and has a high maneuverability capability to counter highly maneuverable threats. The missile utilizes a solid-fuel rocket motor for propulsion and has a range of over 31 miles.
