Haredi Jews in West Jerusalem celebrate Palestine, not Israeli Independence Day

“We want the Palestinians to gain back their land because we are not thieves”

While some Israelis marked May 1 as a celebration of their country’s independence, dozens of Haredi Jews took to the streets of West Jerusalem to protest the existence of the Israeli state.

One demonstrator, Daniel, told Anadolu Agency that he and his fellow protesters raised the Palestinian flag “as a symbol that we have no war with them,” adding, “The Palestinians are our brothers… and we want them to live peacefully and with complete freedom.”

Members of the Haredi community, which rejects Zionism on strict religious grounds, organised the procession.
