On January 27, 1945, Raymundo da Costa Canário, nicknamed "Canari", was flying his P-47 Thunderbolt over the mountains of northern Italy. He was part of the 1st Brazilian Fighter Squadron, tasked with disrupting and destroying German reinforcements as the war in Europe neared its end.
