A radical expression is a mathematical expression that includes a radical symbol (√), which represents a root. The most common radical is the square root (√), but there are also cube roots (∛), fourth roots, and higher-order roots.
Parts of a Radical Expression
1. Radical Symbol (√) – Indicates the root is being taken.
2. Radicand – The number or expression inside the radical.
3. Index – The small number outside the radical that tells which root is being taken (if no number is written, it is assumed to be 2 for square roots).
Examples of Radical Expressions
√16 = 4 (Square root of 16)
∛27 = 3 (Cube root of 27)
√(x²) = x (Square root of x squared)
4√(81) (Fourth root of 81)
