What is Active Directory?

Watch our short video on Active Directory, then get more AD questions answered here: delinea.com/what-is/active-directory

Transcript:

Active Directory, or AD, is a directory service developed by Microsoft that provides secure access and identity management for users, computers, and other resources on a Windows domain network. It is a hierarchical database that stores information about network objects like user accounts, groups, policies, devices, and more.

Active Directory allows network administrators to centrally manage access controls, set security policies, and deploy programs across an organization's IT infrastructure. It also enables automation of common IT tasks related to user and device authentication and authorization.

The Active Directory database is organized logically into domains, trees, and forests. A domain contains objects that share a common directory database. One or more domains with a shared configuration make up a tree. And a forest is a collection of trees that share a common schema and trust relationships. This hierarchical structure enables admins to manage access and apply policies at different levels.
