Several years ago, I worked at Energy Circle, a company that sells most of the energy monitoring products on the market. In my role at CTO, I had the chance to test numerous devices that could tell you about the energy usage in your house. Some just plug in to a wall socket, some are installed within the electrical panel, and several attach at the electricity meter itself. Each have their place, but after monitoring my energy use for a number of years, I came to see that simplicity will win the day. And this is why I though WattVision had a clear advantage from the start.

The ones that plug in (like the Kill-a-Watt, and some new stuff from Belkin) are useful for specific cases, but really don't provide much value. Sure you can plug in and see how much your fridge draws when it's on, but that's not really the problem you want to solve, if you think about it. Your electricity bill is based not just on watts, but watt-hours -- how long, over the course of a day or month does your fridge run, and how much does it use when it runs?

Then there are a group of monitors that attach at your electrical box. Simple ones just have things called CT clamps that wrap around the main power leads coming into your home; you have to take the front off your electrical panel to get at the wires. Assuming you're willing to do this (most makers strongly advise that you hire an electrician), you now have a device that reads and perhaps records the electricity your home uses. The simple ones are flawed, and tend to be only modestly accurate. The fancier ones use additional connections to calculate "true power" ... and really fancy ones like eMonitor let you measure each circuit, separately.
