Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the Eastern Front of World War II starts out with the prelude episode #2. Previously we discussed the events of the aftermath of the Great War (   • What Happened After the Great War? Ea...  ), while this episode will focus on the Soviet Military in the 1920s. In this episode of our Eastern Front week-by-week series, we explore the Rise of the Red Army and the Soviet Reconquests following the chaos of World War I and the Russian Civil War. As Lenin's new regime sought to reclaim the lands of the fallen Tsarist Empire, fierce battles erupted across Eastern Europe. We then examine the Baltic Wars and the Struggle for Independence, where Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania fought bitterly to maintain their sovereignty against Soviet incursions. Next, we turn to the Polish-Soviet War and Treaty of Riga, a brutal conflict that shaped Eastern Europe’s future, as Poland, under Józef Piłsudski, repelled a Red Army offensive and secured a hard-fought peace. From there, we dive into Early Red Army Leadership and Ideological Clashes, detailing how figures like Trotsky and Stalin shaped the army's foundation, often in opposition to one another. We explore the Political Control and Professionalization of the Red Army, where internal debates over militias versus standing armies eventually led to a formal military structure. Finally, we uncover the Soviet-German Military Cooperation and Naval Reforms, revealing secret collaborations that laid the groundwork for the doctrines both nations would use in World War II.
