Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with U.S. President Donald Trump Tuesday for a highly anticipated get together amid a trade war between the two countries.
Trump started by congratulating Prime Minister Carney during the meeting in the Oval Office, calling Carney's election win “probably one of the greatest comebacks in the history of politics,” and adding that Carney ran a “really great election" in his opinion.
The U.S. president seemed to take a veiled jab at former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, calling her a “terrible person” and saying Freeland “tried to take advantage” of the USMCA talks. Freeland currently serves on Carney's cabinet as Minister of Transport and Minister of Internal Trade.
Trump was otherwise very cordial with Carney, saying "we're going to be friends with Canada," while taking a few jabs at Carney's predecessor Justin Trudeau, whom Trump referred to as "governor" of the "51st state."
