St. Louis Fed economist and Research Officer Subhayu Bandyopadhyay unpacks how COVID-19 disrupted the push factors (think: political instability) and pull factors (think: economic opportunities) that drive immigration flows and led the portion of immigrants in the employed workforce to fall both sharply and disproportionally lower than overall U.S. employment. But, he explains, as pandemic-related disruptions eased, immigrant employment share recovered to its pre-pandemic levels—marking a heavy but transient burden on immigrant employment patterns in the U.S.
