NZ Severe Weather Update - Thursday 1st May 2025

• A Red Strong Wind Warning has been issued for Wellington, warning of severe gale winds and gust of 140km/h. The warnings run through into the early hours of the morning for Friday.
• The combination of Heavy rain, strong winds and rough coastal conditions is likely to bring further impacts to the exposed Wellington and Wairarapa South Coast.
• Heavy Rain continues to fall across Canterbury this afternoon, heaviest across the north of the region and up towards the Kaikoura Coast. Heavy Rain Warnings continue until later in the day on Thursday and into Friday morning while drier weather starts to move northwards.
• The deep area of low pressure that continues to feed the rain into Canterbury and drive the wind into Wellington remains close to hand throughout Thursday. Heading into Friday the weather begins to improve with some drier and more settled weather forecast for the weekend.
