DETER

The group Save the Elephants is helping farmers near Tsavo National Park who say the elephants are destroying their crops. They use African honeybees to deter the huge animals who fear the tiny insects.

To deter is to restrain or prevent someone from taking action, usually through fear of the result of such action.
For example, posting an armed guard at a store could deter stealing.
