CPS and CTU: Partners in Chaos and Failure

Summary of Public Affairs’ Jeff Berkowitz’s October 21, 2024, conversation with Ted Dabrowski, President, Wirepoints
Ted Dabrowski applies his Wharton School and University of Chicago business, economics and public policy training and his three decades of Citibank and think tank finance, budget and education analysis experience to understanding K-12 education pathologies in Chicago and the rest of the State. His conclusion sadly, for now, is that the Chicago Public Schools (“CPS”) and two thirds, or so, of the other IL public school systems inability to teach students how to read, write and do basic math with proficiency are unfixable.
This is because the systems are not designed and managed to teach kids the basic tools they need to learn, to think thoughtfully and to be productive members of civil society, but in large part to maximize power and salaries for the administrators and faculty leaders who run CPS, the union leadership and teacher foot soldiers who run and manage The Chicago Teachers’ Union and teachers’ unions around the State.
The third element of this corrupt and chaotic triad are the IL legislative Leaders, their foot soldiers and most of the Governors during the last half Century who have sold statutes and Constitutional Amendments to give monopoly power to public schools and teachers unions in exchange for campaign contributions to help the politician achieve and maintain their political power throughout the State.
It is on the above described institutional baseball diamond, so to speak, that the first CPS Board elections are taking place in a week and Dabrowski debates and discusses the meaning and potential impact of those elections with show host Jeff Berkowitz.
