Everyday Grammar Video: Goodbye In Informal Conversations

JR: In an earlier lesson we talked about ways to say goodbye. We only had time for the formal ways, like “Goodbye” and “Have a good day.”

Dr.J: Today, we want to teach some informal ways to part from a friend.

JR: If you think you will see them soon, you might say, “See you soon” or “See ya’ soon”

Dr.J: When we speak informally, we often used the reduced vowel, or schwa, which sounds like ‘uh.” In writing, you might see this written with “ya” as in “See ya later” or “See ya’ around!”

JR: The structure for these expressions is Verb (with an optional Preposition) + you + time

Example: See you later

DrJ: One example with a preposition is, “Talk to you later.”

JR: So we might say, “see you tomorrow” or “catch you next week.”

Dr.J: Sometime we just use “until” with “later” or another time word. For example, “Until tomorrow.”

JR: I’ve heard people just say, “later.”

Dr.J: And sometimes we are saying goodbye to someone we don’t expect to see again soon. In that case, we wish them well.

JR: At the goodbye party for Mary, I heard some of those. One was “Take care of yourself and stay in touch.”

Dr.J: Right. If someone is leaving on a trip, you can wish them a safe journey, with “Have a safe trip!”

JR: Or we can say, “Drive safely.”

Dr.J: Well. I have to go now, John. As our friend Anna says, “Until next time!”

JR: Later, Jill! And that’s Everyday Grammar!
