Instagram algorithm updated recently. Here are my thoughts.
This short is taken from a full length video, which you can find here:
• INSTAGRAM STUCK? ⚠️ (the algorithm’s broken)
Via the Full Video:
I made a video two weeks ago talking about how bad Instagram's algorithm has become. In that video I gave action plans for both smaller creators and large creators to survive on IG. I said that new pages on Instagram can grow fast by focusing on reels, and large pages can retain decent growth by focusing on carousel posts more.
In the weeks following that video, I've noticed my reach go down even more on Instagram. It seems as though nothing is working for my page anymore. Instagram is determined to kill themepages and decrease the reach of big pages.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has stated that IG is intentionally doing both of these things - reach drops for themepages (content curators) and shifting reach away from big accounts towards small accounts.
I suspect this is so Instagram can compete more aggressively with TikTok and Vero (Instagram photo alternative). I don't think they want new users moving to other platforms, so I think they're trying to boost the reach of new creators, to incentivize them to make a new page on Instagram.
There are only so many people consuming content on Instagram however, so boosting reach for small creators seems to be coming at the cost of large creator's reach right now.
I don't know if that's a smart and viable strategy long term for Instagram.
If large pages become annoyed with Instagram and leave the platform, that could lead to a decrease in content quality across the platform. Larger creators on IG tend to have more infrastructure and data behind their content - meaning they're better at creating "good content" than many smaller creators.
Attacking the consistent creative class on Instagram - larger pages - is short sided in my view.
If they move away from Instagram and onto a competitor's platform, that's a huge problem for IG. The last thing they should want is creative talent taking their resources elsewhere.
Without good content, Instagram is nothing.
That's why I think "Instagram is over." If Instagram doesn't change course, I don't see this going well in the longterm. I don't think Instagram can just break overnight - I think it'll be a slow death. But nonetheless, I think Instagram is headed in that direction if they don't start making better decisions as a company.
It feels as though Instagram lacks a lot of direction as a company in general.
I hope this isn't the end of Instagram. I really do love this platform, but ultimately, it's becoming harder and harder to build a brand on IG.
If you're trying to grow a new Instagram account from zero in 2022 or 2023, then I think it makes sense to stay with Instagram. Instagram is prioritizing smaller pages right now, so take advantage of that. I don't recommend you put all of your eggs in the Instagram basket though. Instagram has proven that it can't be trusted to look out for creators.
*Side note, I ran a poll on my channel recently and 95% of my audience believes that Instagram does a poor job of caring for its creators.
If you're a larger creator on Insta right now, I think it makes sense to repost your content on Instagram, but I'm not seeing any reason why you should make Instagram your primary focus. I think YouTube shorts present way more opportunity for fast follower growth right now.
TikTok too - I'm seeing better growth on TT than IG right now. Instagram just seems to be behind the curve. Ultimately, a big part of that is their slow, out of touch algorithm. Instagram's algorithm sucks. I've explained how the algorithm works many times, but they're always changing it, and most of Instagram's updates suck. Most of IG's updates just make the algorithm worse. It seems like Instagram always over-corrects any problems that they have with their algo.
The only real way to hack Instagram's algorithm for fast growth right now, is to build up a small audience and post high quality reels.
I hope this helps you with whatever you're seeing on Instagram right now.
I want us all to do well and flourish.
I love you guys!
Thank you for your time!
God Bless!
Mitch
