$4.24 million was lost by eCommerce businesses to data breach costs in 2021. PCI DSS is the acronym for Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, a protocol set up by the card schemes to manage data security standards for businesses that store, transmit and process cardholders' data.
Based on the volume of card transactions they process during a year, either online, face-to-face or in total, all merchants fall into one of the four levels of PCI compliance.
PCI DSS may not be a law, however, card brands are responsible to administer fines to acquirers who process payments for merchants involved in a data breach and that do not comply with PCI DSS.
