Alt London Tours: Rachman Rules in Notting Hill

Late 1950s and early 1960s Notting Hill in London was a hotbed of slum rentals, illegal drinking and betting dens, set up and maintained by landlords like Perec Rachman. Polish immigrant Rachman bought up local properties and rented them out at high prices to local prostitutes and incoming migrants from the West Indian community.

He ruled the local rental market with the aid of several local hardmen and known enforcers. Aidan McManus takes us on a tour of the heart of his rental territory around Powis Square and the iconic Hedgegate.
