"A crazy uncle of mine who likes math had his 50th birthday on
11/11/11. So, of course I had to make him a spectacular geometric
shape incorporating those numbers in some way. Here it is. It has 111
pieces and 50 of the stellations point outwards (although actually I
got this by leaving off the two stellations where the string
attaches).
"The central shape without the stellations is a truncated icosahedron
(same shape as a soccer ball). There are 20 caltrops-like shapes
around the outside. 'Caltropsahedron' is the best word I can think of
for it. Put a spherical lamp inside a 'caltropsahedron' and you get a
'tetradamallian' which is the name of this channel. It is also my
channel picture. It is sort of like 'tatterdemalion' only with 'tetra'
instead of 'tatter'. I just thought it sounded cool.
"I nicknamed this shape 'nibbling sputnik' because at one point when I
was making it, the central shape had eyes and a mouth and wires
radiating out all over and looked rather like an alien. I don't know
what the actual mathematical name for it would be. The excellent
photography is by Studi037. Anyway I hope you like it!
