Excel - Charts and Graphs - Too Many Slices: Episode 1287

Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Too many pie slices in a chart.

Welcome to the MrExcel podcast. In this episode, we will be discussing Excel charts and graphs, specifically the issue of having too many slices in a pie chart. I'm Bill Jelen and I'll be your host for today's netcast.

Pie charts are a popular way to visually represent data, but in real life, things are not always as simple as having 3 or 4 slices. Some products may be top sellers while others are barely making any sales. This can result in a pie chart with a few significant slices and a bunch of tiny ones that are difficult to make sense of. That's where the Pie of Pie and Bar of Pie options come in.

To access these options, simply right-click on the pie chart and choose "Format." From there, you can select either Pie of Pie or Bar of Pie. This will split the smaller slices into a secondary axis, making it easier to see the important data. However, the default settings may not always be ideal, so you can further customize the split by choosing to split by position, value, or percentage value.

Another important aspect to consider is the size and gap of the secondary plot. You can adjust these settings in the "Format Data Series" dialogue box. This allows you to control the visibility of the smaller slices and decide whether you want to focus on the main items or the smaller ones. Just be careful with the "Pie Explosion" setting, as it has a tendency to reset to zero.

So there you have it, a simple yet effective way to deal with too many slices in a pie chart. As always, thank you for tuning in to the MrExcel netcast.
