Paetongtarn Provides Updates on Thai-US Tariff Talks
.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has provided updates on her administration’s plans to negotiate with the US government over tariff issues, insisting the process will remain within the 90-day tariff pause and that adjustments are being made to respond to ongoing fluctuations.
.
Speaking to reporters after Tuesday's weekly Cabinet meeting, Paetongtarn said she believes Thailand’s proposal is now strong enough for negotiations with the US.
.
The talks, initially scheduled for April 23, were reportedly postponed due to dissatisfaction from the Trump administration with Thailand's initial proposal. A new date for the meeting has not yet been disclosed.
.
Several ASEAN countries have faced high US tariffs on their exports, with Thailand being hit with a 36 percent rate. However, the US government suspended this tariff for 90 days starting April 9.
.
Paetongtarn also disclosed that she had engaged in behind-the-scenes discussions with ASEAN leaders and business representatives regarding the issue.
